Damage Control and Jury Rigging

Having a basic kit of tools and supplies on hand may make the difference between losing your boat and being able to make it back into port safely.

The following checklists describe how to equip your boat for damage control situations. Take into account the construction of your boat (wood, fiberglass, metal) when selecting damage control supplies. See also the related checklists of recommended tools and recommended spare parts.

Equipping Your Boat for Damage Control

Basic Materials for Jury Rigged Repairs
  1/4" plywood  
  1" aluminum bar stock  
  Assortment of hoses in 1/4" (fuel), 1/2" and 5/8" (water), 1" and 1 1/4" (engine/heater hose).  
  Assorted hose clamps  
  Assortment of adhesives: 3M's 4200 (fast-set version of 5200), epoxy, silicone sealer  
  Duct tape, wire ties, whipping twine, monel seizing wire  
  1/8" thick sheet of gasket rubber  
     
Removing the Damaged Rig
  3lb short-handled sledge hammer and steel punch pin  
  Heavy-duty wire cutters (not bolt cutters)  
  Hacksaw and blades  
Stop the Intrusion of Water
  Collision mat (e.g. a spare sail)  
  1/4" plywood  
  Quick-set underwater epoxy putty
